The 44th Hungarian Press Photo exhibition at Budapest's Capa Center presents work by 258 photographers, as organisers stress the value of authentic, signed photojournalism in the age of AI.

The 44th Hungarian Press Photo exhibition is on show at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center in Budapest, presenting photographs taken in 2025. According to the Capa Center, 258 photographers submitted 2,355 entries comprising 6,196 photographs, which an international jury assessed over four selection rounds. Euronews reports that the exhibition shows the top three entries and special prize-winners in each of sixteen categories, along with works the jury considered exceptionally important or exciting.

At the opening, managing director Orsolya Kőrösi said, as quoted by Euronews, that photojournalism is becoming more important as it grows harder to tell genuine images from artificially generated ones, because photojournalists are present, bear witness and put their own name to the claim that what they show is close to reality. Photographer András Bánkuti, chair of the Photojournalists Section of the Hungarian Press Association (MÚOSZ), explained that retouching is not allowed in the competition: once a picture is altered, it is immediately out of the running.

Euronews reports that the MÚOSZ Grand Prize went to freelance photographer Diana Nemeh for her series "Nimród", while the André Kertész Grand Prize was awarded to Telex photographer Noémi Napsugár Melegh. Napsugár Melegh spent years photographing her grieving family and her late brother's classmates after his death at 18, and said she made the pictures "for the drawer" before showing them to close professional friends. The exhibition opened on 16 September 2026 at the Capa Center, 8 Nagymező Street; the organiser lists it as running until 15 November, while Euronews gave an earlier closing date of 8 November, so visitors should confirm with the venue.
