Rudi Fuchs, who led Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum and directed Documenta 7, has died in Amsterdam on 25 October, according to reports citing The Art Newspaper and Het Parool.

Rudi Fuchs, the acclaimed Dutch art historian and former director of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, has died at the age of 84. According to ARTnews, which cited a report by The Art Newspaper France, Fuchs passed away in Amsterdam on 25 October. His family told the Dutch outlet Het Parool that "throughout his working life, he devoted himself to the visual arts."

Fuchs is considered one of the Netherlands' most influential art critics and museum leaders. ARTnews reports that he ran the Stedelijk Museum from 1993 until the early 2000s, was in charge of Documenta 7 in Kassel in 1982, and served as artistic director of the Castello di Rivoli near Turin from 1984 to 1990, among other senior positions at art institutions.

In its coverage, ARTnews describes Fuchs as a curator known for an impressionistic approach, which he likened to composing music or creating a play, and notes that he famously disliked wall labels. The reports available so far do not give details of a funeral or memorial, and further tributes from the institutions he led may follow.
