The Hollywood Reporter says Lawrence Lamont will direct 'Last Friday', the first Friday film from New Line since 2002, with Ice Cube writing, producing and starring.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Lawrence Lamont, who made his feature debut last year with One of Them Days, has been tapped to direct Last Friday, the next instalment of New Line's Friday comedy series. According to the trade publication, it is the first film in the franchise since Friday After Next in 2002. Ice Cube, who co-created the series, is writing the script, producing and starring, while Bob Teitel and Michael Gruber of Cube's company CubeVision are also producing. The report does not give a release date or name any other cast members.

The original Friday, directed by F. Gary Gray and released in 1995, followed Craig Jones (Ice Cube) and Smokey (Chris Tucker) through a day of trouble in South Central Los Angeles, and Cube wrote it with DJ Pooh. The Hollywood Reporter describes it as a cult hit that led to two sequels, Next Friday in 2000 and Friday After Next in 2002, both written by Cube alone. Tucker appeared only in the first film, and the series also inspired a short-lived animated show on MTV2.

Per the same report, Last Friday will shoot in Southern California under the state's production incentive programme, with New Line receiving $11.4 million, and is planned for 40 filming days with 43 cast members and 150 crew. Lamont built his career directing music videos for artists including Big Sean, J. Cole, Snoop Dogg and Nas. His debut, the buddy comedy One of Them Days starring Keke Palmer and SZA, cost $14 million, grossed more than $51 million worldwide and later topped Netflix for four consecutive weeks, according to the publication.
