A previously unreleased 1978 Bowie concert will be turned into an immersive arena experience called 'Stage' by Brett Morgen, with a world premiere at Berlin's Uber Arena on 14 February 2027 alongside the Berlin Film Festival.
The world premiere of 'Stage', an immersive concert experience built around David Bowie, has been set for 14 February 2027 at Berlin's Uber Arena, Variety and NME reported on 27 October. It will take place in association with the 77th Berlin International Film Festival, a rare foray into alternative programming for the European film event. Berlinale director Tricia Tuttle said the festival is a place where cinema, art and new forms of storytelling intersect, and called a Bowie premiere in a city so closely tied to him especially meaningful.
The production is based on recently discovered and restored footage from Bowie's 1978 Isolar II world tour, when he performed material from his album 'Heroes'. NME describes the source as raw, unseen 35mm film of a show at London's Earls Court that has stayed in the Bowie archives for almost 50 years. Documentary maker Brett Morgen found the original camera negatives while working on 'Moonage Daydream'. The show is a collaboration between Rob Hallett's Wonderworld, the David Bowie Estate and Morgen, and pairs the footage with three-screen projection, transparent LED screens, lighting by Patrick Woodroffe and a 7.1 spatial-audio mix by Oscar winner Paul Massey, aiming to make it feel as though Bowie and his band are on stage.
Hallett called the footage an 'extraordinary treasure' and said the aim is to stay 100 per cent faithful to Bowie's legacy while making his work accessible to a new generation. NME reports that tickets go on sale on Friday 30 October, that the show will tour other European cities from May, and that UK dates, including Earls Court, are planned for June and July; it also notes the plans sit alongside the 'Bowie80' celebrations of what would have been his 80th birthday. Bowie himself said in 2000 that he disliked how the 1978 footage had been shot but suspected it would be released in future. Morgen will also speak at the Berlinale's European Film Market, with further details promised in coming weeks.
