A student-led movement won Serbia's snap parliamentary election on 25 October, ending 14 years of dominance by Aleksandar Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party and sparking celebrations in Belgrade.

A student-led movement has won Serbia's snap parliamentary election, held on Sunday 25 October 2026, delivering a historic defeat to Aleksandar Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and ending 14 years of political dominance, according to reports from Al Jazeera and France 24. France 24 reported that Vucic conceded defeat to the movement, known as the Student List.

On Monday, celebrations gripped Belgrade. France 24 described drivers honking their horns and passers-by holding up three fingers, the ballot number of the winning list, while residents cleaned a park between parliament and the presidency after Vucic loyalists who had camped there for more than a year left. Reuters broadcast live from Slavija Square as students gathered to mark the result.

The transition is expected to be turbulent. Al Jazeera notes that presidential elections are due in December and that the new authorities must first confront institutions that analysts say were captured under SNS rule, including the judiciary, prosecution service, police and media. Analysts quoted by Al Jazeera expect a gradual rather than sudden shift in foreign policy, with no immediate move to join EU sanctions on Russia, though contracts with Israel may face review and hopes of EU integration could revive.
